The NEMA NU 4-2008 standard proposes a standardized methodology for evaluating the performance of positron emission tomography (PET) designed for small animal imaging.

The phantom is made of PMMA and includes different cavities. One half of the phantom is equipped with a large cavity (Ø = 30 mm) that can be filled with a radioisotope (hot zone). This large cavity encloses two small cavities (cold zones) separated from the large cavity that can be filled with water and air.

The other half of the phantom houses five small fillable cavities (Ø = 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm) that are arranged circular and connected to the large cavity in the first half of the phantom (hot zone).
